fangirl_101 :
You will need:
- A box of your favorite brownie mix (I use Duncan Hines Fudgy Brownies, but any type would probably work as well.)
- 1 orange, preferably a sweeter variety like navel (I don't know why, but a higher sugar content in the juice is important.)
- Powdered
- Cinnamon
- Cloves
- Chipotle chiles or regular chiles
- 1 4oz. (1/2 cup) container of unsweetened, unflavored applesauce
- Kosher or other coarse salt.
1) Empty brownie packet into bowl as usual.
2) Add between 1/8 and 1/4 teaspoon of cloves to the mix. (Or omit it if you don't like cloves.)
3) Add about 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon to the mix.
4) Depending on your tolerance for spice, add between 1/2 and 1 teaspoon of chile powder. (Chipotle chile powder has a couple different layers of flavor, but a regular chile powder or even cayenne pepper can work.)
5) Mix the spices thoroughly into the mix.
6) Add the eggs and applesauce.
7) Juice the orange and measure out as much juice as water is required. If there's not enough juice, make up the difference with water; if there's more than enough juice, add or do not add the remainder at your discretion.
8) Mix and put in pan, as usual.
9) Before putting pan in oven to bake, sprinkle top of brownie batter with a pinch of kosher or coarse salt.
Serving: Let cool completely. Cut into squares or bars as you like. Top with a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
