So, more than a month after I was all, "Oh, I'm going to finish at least two books before Christmas," I finally have progress. I forgot how working 9 to 5 is completely draining, even more so than working 4 p.m. to midnight, like I did when I was on the copy desk. :::is nostalgic:::

Anyways, books I've finished, books I'm reading and books I haven't started under the cut.
No mobiles! No Walkmans! None of this! Or any of the others! )
But I have in the last month or so, I've watched all of SPACED, which was awesome for a variety of reasons, including a) Simon Pegg, b) Jessica (Stevenson) Hynes, c) Nick Frost, d) Edgar Wright, e) unapologetic hate of 'Phantom Menace', f) Manny from Black Books, g) Jaffa Cakes, and h) how Dan Harmon clearly had this in mind when he developed Community. I've also watched through S3 of The I.T. Crowd, which is unmitigatedly silly and absurd. I have S2 of the original Life on Mars waiting atop the telly, as well as S5 of the new Who, with Matt Smith, so I can watch that. I'll be a busy, busy girl.

Found this on my friend's Facebook profile & it struck me as an interesting experiment. (However, I deleted most of her drunken rants, amusing though they were.)

I've read 34, if you don't count the series of multiple books that are on this list. Moreover, the number jumps to 52 if I count the books I have immediate access to but haven't gotten to yet. And I've seen the definitive movie version of a few more.

Still, I'm smarter than the average British citizen. Holla.

Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here.  Instructions: Copy this into your NOTES.

• Bold those books you've read in their entirety.

• Italicize the ones you started but didn't finish or read only an excerpt.

Tag other book nerds. Tag me as well so I can see your responses! (Or not, after all reading is not a competition! I'm betting that we're all well over 6 books, and I am curious to see the common ground).

In the interest of continuing education, I invite everyone to visit this post at Topless Robot that gives English translations and pronunciations for the 15 best examples of Chinese curses. I fully plan to learn & memorize a couple of these to pull out at moments of frustration and insanity.

If foreign language cursing is your thing, here is how to swear in five languages (and a bonus):
Shit (American English)
Shite (British English)
Shiza (German)
Mierda (Spanish)
Mierde (French)

Bonus: Póg mo thóin (pawk maa hawn) is gaelic for 'Kiss my ass'. Some may say it's Irish Gaelic in origin, but it's not: It's shared between Scots, Irish & Welsh gaelic.

If cursing isn't your bag, may I suggest seeing if you can find "Brother, Can you Spare a Dream?", which is a documentary about Hollywood & film in the 1930s.

The last several years I've been obsessed with cultural depictions of 'home', in movies/TV, music and literature. For instance:

  • As much as I loved theRose/9/10 arc, my favorite parts of the new 'Doctor Who' were the stories that had to do with the Doctor having the option to bring his home planet back into existence, and his dilemma.
  • The turning point in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' was when Buffy's mom kicked her out of the house: The Buffy that came back to Sunnydale at the beginning of the 3rd season was a different girl, not leastways because she'd lost the sense kids have sometimes that 'home' always means 'welcome' and 'safe.'
  • Likewise, when Angel and his crew were forced out of the Hyperion by his demonic-sort-of-granddaughter on 'Angel', what was most jarring was that all the weapons, all the research materials - all their stuff that they clung to for comfort - wasn't available to them.
  • In two of my current favorite book series - Rhys Bowen's 'Her Royal Spyness' and Gail Carriger's 'Parasol Protectorate' - the heroines (and their leading men) are homeless in some way: Either they have no money & have lost the family seat, are asked to leave their home, or find that the other person - not the builiding - is their home.

But all of that is sort of difficult to dissect in a single post (which is all I feel like devoting to this at the moment), in addition to being highly subjective. So, I searched through my music to find all the songs about 'home' and narrowed it down to a reasonable list.

15. Our House, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

In the interest of putting off going to bed and waking up to my new job tomorrow morning (well, later this morning, as it's after midnight), I thought I would make myself a list of what is in my 'To Read' pile. That's what is below the cut, so please feel free to ignore this post. It's mostly for my own sake, as I'd probably lose a list someplace else - even on my PC.

Oh, man. So *many* words. )
